I have no desire to write poetry, but merely wanted some insight into understanding and appreciating it. I enjoy literary fiction, but poetry seemed inaccessible. The Discovery of Poetry demystified for me the technical frameworks on which poems are built, and also gave me some insight into various artistic techniques as well. As the author mentioned somewhere, there will always be something indefinable about a great poem which defies analysis. Her explanations have removed some of the barriers I felt before.

I also went out and picked up Young Edgar Allan Poe, and read it, exploring his life from a small child in beautiful detail to his death. If you haven't read any of Edgar Allan Poe's writings yet, please do so. Now...
At first when you read some of his writings, you get washed away by the old-fashioned literature, to the insanity of his mind (which isn't so, mind you).
